An Ode to a Friend

In the Absence of Structure
Camille Burg

To the great friend whom I do cherish
For you hold me to my word
And listens to my babbling most absurd
In hopes that our bonds will not perish

I pray we may know one another through thick
And yes, even those times that are quite thin
You know what makes me tick
And I know what makes you grin
In the end, it is both of us who win

None of this rhyming nonsense
We have had our share
In the absence of structure
Perhaps horizons will widen

You’re like the mint in my tea
The firefly in my night sky
And dare I say it
Even the icing on my cake

To this friend in need, you are a friend
No, not indeed, for that would rhyme
You are a friend, undeniably
Yes, yes, undeniably a faithful fellow

In this short ode, I cannot say everything
For that would take thousands of words
Words and more words, when in one hug
You will understand everything I wish to say
On this last note, I rhyme to express that I pray
We will happily know one another until we are gray
